Meet The Blogger

The Thurber Brigade has been blogging for eight years now.  Blogging initially about relationships and the interaction between men and women, but expanding to politics, daily living and more. Well, it's about time to give a little insight into this clever (in his mind) writer. So below is a short pictorial history of the author.

My writing space, early days
As noted, I'm a writer and you can see the books on the right side of the page. I've written short stories and news articles as well as political pamphlets and okay, graffiti in bathrooms.

In the past, I was an academic advisor at The University of Texas.

Years ago, I was a grunt (infantry) in the 82nd Airborne.

Scotland, Australia, The UK, Europe, Panama, Mexico, Canada are the places I've visited overseas.

Hiking in the mountains is one of my favorite pastimes.

Hurricane Ridge, Olympic NP

Boy, do I love sports, especially hockey.

Besides watching and playing sports, I've also coached and reffed (I could mention a book I wrote about coaching, but never got it published).

I'm pretty fond of going to beer festivals too.

Over the years, I've had numerous pets.

Well, like most people, I have tons of pictures (click on these to see larger version), but this should give you a little more background behind the poison pen at The Thurber Brigade. Sorry, no childhood pictures. Gotta save those for Part II at some later date.

 Okay, just one.

Zorro!

Okay, I know this blog may appear vain and self-glorious. A bunch of pictures of Jay? Sheesh. Well, it may seem that way but it's really more of a touch of laziness and distractions too many to count. I wanted to have some sort of blog for January, but hey, I watched a little too much football, got too excited about politics and maybe celebrated a few holidays a little too much. I'll get back to my more snarky, funny and maybe a little insightful blogs real soon. Trust me.

  1. That was fun. So, hey, I'll play along! Only without the pictures.

    Meet the Reader

    Here is some of my job history:
    * clerk for my dad's shipping business
    * cashier (grocery stores, Kmart)
    * Girl Scout overnight camp counselor (I'm sure that Conroe, Texas is a lot like Panama. Well, maybe not!)
    * life guard and swim meet timer
    * teachers' aide, tutor, student teacher, and teaching assistant
    * math teacher certification test scorer
    * technical typist (UT Department of Zoology, now defunct) and occasional transcriptionist
    * census worker and elections worker
    And you already know about degree audit lady.

    We may or may not have been to some of the same places overseas:
    * Belgium
    * Switzerland
    * The Netherlands
    * England
    * Jamaica

    I'm not into spectator sports except during the Olympics or if my friends are playing. But I have enjoyed ballroom dance, ultimate frisbee, swimming, jogging, volleyball, and much less hiking than you. I have not coached, but I have taught Red Cross swimming and canoeing (and first aid) classes. Any photo of me in any of these activities would be much less blurry than your sporting photos!

    Yeah, distractions? During a pandemic and democracy trials? Okay, maybe.

    1. Wow, pretty impressive Debbie. From camp counselor to degree audit guru is an impressive jump I think. And your sport collection is pretty strong too. I sort of cheated in some of my travels. The exotic places of Panama and Alaska that I hit really came about because of the military. But I still count them. Thanks for checking in. Oh, I had checked out your book/movie list and I'm impressed. Considering I write book, I need to read more of them, but mainly read magazines, newsletter and news sites.

    2. I wanted to be a teacher for the longest time--I taught my little brother to read! But I also looked 12 for the longest time and did not look like a good disciplinarian, so I never got a teaching job. I did get to hang around education, though.

      My Belgium trip also came about because of the military. My sister's husband was stationed there three years--so I got to visit twice! My Switzerland trip came about because a friend decided to do her postdoc somewhere interesting. My cheater listing is Jamaica, which was a stopover on a cruise, but it was a pretty exciting day, what with getting driven down the left side of the narrow road by a lady who talked with her hands, telling us interesting stories.

      What are your favorite kinds of books to read? I like ones with fun/witty, decent characters. Reading is what I do instead of adulting.

    3. I wanted to teach too, got my certificate but could never crack the Austin job market (and didn't want to leave town). I alternate my reading from nonfiction books on history or politics to Fiction mysteries and humor/satire.

    4. Cool. What certification? I got secondary social studies composite and psychology. Then added secondary math. Eventually I realized I do not have the charisma to teach the way I'd want to, so it's just as well. I'm good one-on-one and with people who are motivated to learn (even if they hate it), so degree audit training and problem solving worked out well for me.

    5. I also got certified secondary education, but in phys ed and journalism. Which may be why I never caught on at AISD. Two electives in popular fields that no one wants to leave. Of note, I did work for the district as a study hall monitor and in school suspension. Whew. Those were lousy jobs but I also got to coach.
